Progress - even slower than the pilgrims

Thursday came and went with little progress, other than loosening the countertops and slightly enlarging the opening for the pantry. Well, I mustn't forget the installation of the toilet in the bathroom. The shower rod is standing in the tub - makes it tricky to properly hang the shower curtain. I can't get it back in place. All in good time I suppose.

Friday (today) was another story - a very good one. I went off to play golf and that went reasonably well. When I got home around 1 pm, it was hard to get in the door. All the cabinetry was occupying any previously available space. But there was evidence of activity and progress. I had an appointment and headed out again in search of lunch, and then to my destination du jour. The transformation by the time I got home was terrific.

The cabinets and drawers are all essentially installed and most handles have been attached - just missing a few long enough screws. The old piece of laminate countertop is sitting on the new base cabinets and provides a lovely work surface. Except for the little bit of missing counter over the bank of small drawers, the old counters have also been laid temporarily back in place. I must say that selecting the desired cutlery is quicker when one can just reach into the drawer from the top.

Which forks should I use tonight?

The dining table and chairs are now between the loveseat and the tv which makes watching the news a bit tricky. I have to unload the top of the table before I can shove it out of the way and move the chairs. And the mountain of boxes has been shifted so at least the indoor scenery is different. I didn't really expect it to be THIS different. But, I can now unpack the last 25 boxes and put most of the dishes, pots and pans, baking pans and cookie sheets, non-perishable food and the seasonings, when I find them, into their new locations. There is even more cupboard space than I had in 905 so placement isn't predetermined by the downstairs arrangement.

The microwave is not yet installed, and as I type this, the stove is not plugged in. I can't move it so the contractor is coming back to plug it in. Without a stove or microwave, meal preparation is quite simple. Pick up the phone and order takeout. But I don't really want takeout. I have leftovers to heat up - hopefully.

With the forecast promising rain pretty much all the time between now and next weekend, I should have ample opportunity for arranging and cleaning. Painting will start on the weekend although it can't be completed until the finishing touches are put on the kitchen. The baseboards, kick plates, some filler strips are all on hold until next week.

The counters will be measured on Monday and hopefully won't take long to be cut and then installed. I foresee a much different living environment in my near future.

So, here's a peek at the kitchen from different angles. They kind of speak for themselves.

Other things remain to be done. This weekend I've enlisted the help of my handy friend Peggy. Our primary goal will be to install the towel bars and toilet roll holders and if we feel up to the task, we'll tackle putting up the drapery rod and curtains in the bedroom. Maybe we'll even hang some pictures. Not all of those tasks are photo-worthy but when I'm satisfied that all the rooms are in final form, there will be some "show off" pics.
