Murphy showed up today
The Murphy I'm talking about is the guy with the "Laws". If something can go wrong then ...
The day actually started well. The new washer and dryer were delivered at 8 am - hurray. They were unboxed and moved up to 1707 by the supplier. Robin and Gaetan installed them and we rolled up the shelving unit that is the nearest neighbour of the laundry pair in the closet. And we discovered that the utility area where they now all 'live" is a bit larger than the one in #905.
That means there is plenty of room to hang the vacuum cleaner on its charger, to house the card table and three remaining chairs, the ironing board and the step ladder. Yay!
The finishing touches, almost, were put on the wall where the atrium framing was removed and the ceiling got a second coat of, um, plaster? mud? well, whatever. Later it will be stippled to blend in with the rest of the ceiling. All good so far.
The second closet unit was installed in the Master Bedroom. Not a big deal, but I'd forgotten to order the two pullout shelves for shoes. They can be ordered and installed anytime. So really, not a big deal either.
And then it began.
The coax cable which begins in the master bedroom, goes through the wall into the second bedroom/office where the modem will live, was missing. A trip to The Source for a curbside pickup, solved the problem and the cable was connected and routed to the required spot.
The pop-ups for the two bathroom drains turned out to be twice as large as the drains - they have to go back. So, still no way to plug the two sinks.
It was time to install the doors on the utility closet. The sliding doors were too large, so they have to go back. Robin called Piramid Manufacturing in Nepean and they are going to custom make the doors which will cost just about the same as the ones being returned. When those sliding doors were moved out of the bathtub where they had been in repose for a week, lo and behold, there was the coax cable. Grrrr. The flooring guys had put it there to get it out of the way. Anyone need coax?
John came in at 3 to continue the painting. The flooring guys did a terrible job of installing the baseboards and didn't fill any of the randomly placed nail holes. This has taken John 3 hours to remedy. But it's pretty much ready now.
I was back in #905, taping some parts of the bed frame to keep parts together when the side rail tipped over onto my foot, more specifically right on top of my bunion. That bunion has been like a dormant volcano until now. But I suppose with Mt Etna erupting and that volcano in Iceland also providing a spectacle, the bunion was brought back into activity. Ugh! Oh well, what's a little limp among friends. Fortunately I had my shoes on or it could have been worse.
Oh, and when he was about to install the new dishwasher, currently sitting in the dining room, Robin discovered there is no power cord, nor water line. I called Canadian Appliance Source where I bought them and was told that the owner's manual states quite clearly that the machine is hard wired - with what??? and you have to buy a separate water line. Silly me, not asking for an owner's manual to be sent ahead so that I'd know this. I had to shop online because the stores are closed. The salesman I dealt with neglected to inform me of the separate parts that would have to be acquired. I called customer service and was referred to upper management by way of an email address. The agent repeated that the owner's manual states very clearly that the water line is not included. Sigh. I think they count on wearing you out so you don't actually complain in writing. Another item on the to do list.
It is now evening, and I took a little wagonload of stuff upstairs and took the few photos that follow. I'm loving the colour of the accent wall. In the evening light it really doesn't look the same, in the photo below, as when you are looking directly at it. The dining room wall beside it also looks like Taupe, but indeed it is the same grey as everywhere else.
The rolling storage unit in the utility closet has been filled and the boxes freed up for other bits still remaining to be packed. The washer and dryer are just stacked and looking all sparkly and new - as they should - and ready for action.
Oh, and one last thing. There is still no toilet installed. The ensuite throne remains in the shower and the main bathroom one is in the master bedroom. Robin is going to install the ensuite one tomorrow. Somehow John and I will have to move the other one into the bathroom to make room for my bed. Putting the bed back together will be another chore, so I foresee a couple more nights sleeping on the mattress pad on the floor.
Hopefully all the things that could go wrong have already gone wrong. Tomorrow will be challenging for the movers. After they've gone it will be challenging for me because there's very little they can actually place where the furniture belongs.
My lovely neighbour in #907 is bringing me lunch tomorrow at 1 pm. What a lovely gesture. It will be time for a break about then and maybe she will join me outdoors to eat. There won't be anywhere to sit in either apartment and gathering indoors for a meal is not allowed except with someone in your household.
Onward and upward.
